Several types of intensity meters that measure the average repetition
rate of signals generated by the detectors of ionizing radiation are d
iscussed. An intensity meter with a linear transient has the least tim
e constant. The design of the meter, the discriminating amplifier (a g
ain of 1-16, leading edge rise time of 20 nsec, and discrimination thr
eshold of 20 mV-5.1 V) and gated counter (a count rate of up to 25 MHz
, gated detection of pulses with a high duty factor) are presented. Th
e units are designed for CAMAC multichannel intensity meters. Gated co
unters are also convenient for counting systems designed to measure th
e decay time of short-lived nuclei, to detect fluctuations in the repe
tition rates of signals and other variations in the radiation flux.
