Abstract
The next congress of the International Society of Sugar Cane Technolog ists (ISSCT) will take place in 1998 in India (the last was in 1995 in Colombia), and it is not too early to call the attention of the inter national sugar industry to this major event which will be hosted by th e largest and hence most important cane sugar producer, indeed all tog ether the greatest sugar industry in the world. The leading organ of t he Indian sugar industry is the journal Indian Sugar which has appeare d for the last 45 years and thus virtually covers the peri od of India 's independence. The following report is a somewhat shortened version of an article entitled ''Dimensions of Indian sugar economy'' by S.L. JAIN, which appeared in the October 1995 issue of Indian Sugar.
