The potential use of sonography of canine hind limbs to diagnose muscl
e diseases was studied. The morphological changes detected and the tec
hniques used on selected cases are described. Neoplastic changes, whic
h cannot be differentiated into malignant and benign by the method, su
ppurative inflammation and muscular contractures, in the m. quadriceps
, m. gracilis and m. semitendinosus, were characterised. For these exa
minations a 7.5 MHz linear transducer was most appropriate. Ultrasonog
raphy was shown to be useful to display and localise these muscular ch
anges, and to identify their margins with surrounding tissues.
