The isolation of a wavelength-demultiplexing twin-core fibre with nomi
nally identical cores is improved from 7dB to 26dB by increasing the r
efractive index of one core. Tuning relaxes the fabrication tolerances
necessary for greater than or equal to 20dB isolation between channel
s, enhancing the feasibility of using twin-core fibres for demultiplex
ing 1.3 and 1.55mu>m signals in communications systems.
