SYNTHESIS AND X-RAY STRUCTURE OF HEXAKIS (N,N-DIMETHYLACETAMIDE-O)MAGNESIUM TETRACHLOROMAGNESATE

The preparation and the X-ray single-crystal structure determination o f {Mg[CH3CON(CH3)(2)](6)}. [MgCl4] are described. The crystals (C24H54 Cl4Mg2N6O6) are triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, with a = 10.069 (5) Angstrom, b = 10.474(4) Angstrom, c = 18.733(8) Angstrom, alpha = 85.86(3)degrees, beta = 77.84(4)degrees, gamma = 87.55(4)degrees and Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined using ful l-matrix least-squares leading to final R = 0.080 and R(w) = 0.091. Th e obtained compound shows an ionic structure in which the Mg cation is coordinated by six dimethylacetamide moieties through the oxygen atom s and the tetrahedral [MgCl4](2-) acts as counteranion.
