The absorption of carbon monoxide from nitrogen-carbon monoxide mixtur
es has been studied in microporous hollow fiber membranes using ammoni
acal cuprous chloride solution. The permeation rate seems to be contro
lled by diffusion in the liquid at moderate liquid flow rates. At high
liquid now rate, fast chemical reaction in the liquid phase may accel
erate the carbon monoxide mass transfer in the liquid, and membrane re
sistance may limit the carbon monoxide transfer. Under suitable condit
ions, the hollow fiber membrane can be an attractive alternative to pa
cked columns for absorption of carbon monoxide from gas mixtures of in
dustrial relevance.
