Abstract
We determined the capsular serotype, Congo red binding, and the expres sion of the enzymes hyaluronidase and chondroitin sulphatase in 58 bac teraemic isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and K. oxytoca. The distrib ution of capsular serotypes differed from that previously reported in England and Europe. Congo red binding was exhibited by 80% of isolates and 46.1% expressed hyaluronidase. Production of chondroitin sulphata se was uncommon (13.7%) and only 2 isolates of different serotypes exh ibited all three factors.
