In this study, two rheological models, namely the Giesekus and the Pha
n-Thien-Tanner models, are used to simulate the how of a viscoelastic
polymer solution through a planar 4:1 contraction. Both stress and vel
ocity fields are examined at different sections of the flow. The predi
ctions of the numerical simulations using one-mode as well as four-mod
e models are compared with the experimental results from the literatur
e.
