The aim of this article is to summarise the major areas of understandi ng concerning canine parvovirus infection. The article also highlights the important elements which need to be taken into account in practic e. The very particular properties of parvoviruses are recalled togethe r with their repercussions on epidemiology, on pathology and on clinic al aspects are described. The basis of treatment is recalled. Basic kn owledge of passive immunity and the critical period which must be inte grated in medical prophylaxis, at the time of weaning, are described a nd the actual recommended procedure in veterinary practice is explaine d.
