Flower initiation in Chionodoxa luciliae occurs at the end of the grow
ing period, during wilting of leaves. Flower differentiation during dr
y storage seems to be independent from temperature between 5 and 17-de
grees-C although 11-degrees-C seems to increase length of inflorescenc
e. Low planting temperatures are necessary: bulbs stored dry at 5, 11
or 17-degrees-C did not grow and flower, if planted at 11-degrees-C fo
r 15 weeks and than transferred to greenhouse conditions. Only bulbs s
tored at 5-degrees-C for 15 weeks and planted at 5-degrees-C for 12-15
weeks before the transfer to greenhouse conditions, elongated leaves
and inflorescences.
