The kinetics of the reaction between [ReN(H2O)(CN)(4)](2-) and cyanide
has been studied in the ca. pH 8-14 range. The aqua ligand in the [Re
N(H2O)(CN)(4)](2-) complex is substituted by both CN- ions and HCN acc
ording to the following reaction: [GRAPHICS] At 25 degrees C and mu =
1.0 (KNO3), the equilibrium, forward and reverse rate constants of the
reaction with CN- ions were determined as 601(69)M(-1), 7214(411)M(-1
) s(-1) and 12(6)s(-1), respectively, and the forward rate constant fo
r HCN as 3.9(7) x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1). A dissociative activation is prop
osed.
