This paper describes an instrument developed for the semi-continuous m
easurement of aerosol mass and its classification into three classes.
These classes have been chosen to evaluate the health hazards caused b
y inhalable particles. The instrument takes samples through three prob
es, each providing different cut-off points (approximately 15 mum, app
roximately 4 mum, approximately 2 mum) and collects airborne particles
on circular membrane filters. The increase in weight is measured by t
he beta-ray attenuation method.
