Since several countries have released statutory emission limits for PC
DDs and PCDFs in the range of 0.1 ng 2,3,7,8-TCDD TE/Sm-3, reliable sa
mpling and analytical procedures must be established in order to guara
ntee reproducible results. Extraction, clean-up and analytical procedu
re are nowadays considered to be no longer a major source of error, bu
t much greater uncertainties are related to non-representative sample
collection, the possibility of artefacts resulting in discrepant resul
ts and small recoveries. In order to test the representativity of regu
lar samplings performed in monthly intervalls over a period of 1 year
at the MWI Spittelau in Vienna several test runs were performed. To as
sess the intralaboratory deviation of the sampling and analytical meth
od under field conditions six simultaneous samplings were carried out.
In addition a long term sampling over a period of 11-days was perform
ed.
