Abstract
NTT has been developing and implementing digital transmission lines in place of analog ones in order to construct and operate its telecommun ications networks with improved economy. This article describes the de velopment of the Phase II SDH transmission system, which has been desi gned around the operational experience gained so far with the Phase I SDH system to provide improved economy and higher level functions. Fut ure development trends are also discussed.
