The fatigue crack growth behavior of TiC/Ti-alloy composite was examin
ed at 450 degrees C and compared to the room-temperature behavior. Con
trary to the temperature-dependent fatigue crack growth behavior of th
e monolithic alloy, fatigue crack growth resistance of the composite w
as improved at the elevated temperature. At 450 degrees C, the fatigue
threshold of the composite was found to be 50 pet higher than at room
temperature. Such an improved fatigue crack growth resistance is show
n to result from extensive microcracking of reinforcing particles, whi
ch promotes fatigue crack closure at the elevated temperature.
