The bisfuran-containing crown ether 8 has been incorporated, along wit
h bis(paraquat-p-phenylene), into a [2]catenane 2.4PF(6) using a self-
assembly approach. The presence of the furan units in 8 has a disrupti
ve influence upon the hydrogen bonding interactions involving this cro
wn ether receptor and the paraquat dication. The perturbation of the h
ydrogen bonding interactions within the furan-containing [2]catenane 2
.4PF(6) results in changes in the dynamic properties of the relative r
ing motions compared with those observed for the molecular components
of the [2]catenane 1.4PF(6).
