The limited efficacy of single-drug regimens in the treatment of high
blood pressure has led to an evaluation of combination regimens for fi
rst intention treatment. Two-drug regimens favor the hypotensive effic
acy and reduce the frequency of certain side effects, Medications comb
ining two drugs in a single formulation would allow use as first line
treatment although marketing authorizations have not yet been obtained
. In addition, current good clinical practice recommendations do not a
llow combination therapy in this situation. A complete assessment base
d on medical results and cost effectiveness will undoubtedly confirm t
he usefulness of two-drug therapies as first line treatment for modera
te hypertension.
