Three palladium(II) complexes Pd(L)X (X = CH3CO2, Cl, I) of the conjug
ate base of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde benzoylhydrazone (HL) ha
ve been synthesized and characterized. Pd(L)-(CH3CO2) is active in the
catalytic hydrogenation of styrene, phenylacetylene and 1-octyne. Whi
le styrene is hydrogenated to ethylbenzene, alkynes are mainly hydroge
nated to the corresponding olefins. Stable alkynylpalladium(II) comple
xes which are responsible for the loss of catalytic activity have been
isolated and characterized. The X-ray structure of one of them, Pd(L)
(C=C-C6H5), has been determined together with that of the Pd(L)Cl comp
lex
