Abstract
Although general internists recognize the medical complications arisin
g from alcohol abuse, they may be less familiar with its social and ps
ychological consequences or with methods for its treatment. Because in
ternists are the only physicians some patients see, they must be prepa
red to diagnose and take part in the treatment of alcohol problems.
