There are several candidate concepts for tritium breeding blankets tha
t make use of a number of special materials. These materials can be cl
assified as primary blanket materials, which have the greatest influen
ce in determining the overall design and performance, and secondary bl
anket materials, which have key functions in the operation of the blan
ket but are less important in establishing the overall design and perf
ormance. The issues associated with the blanket materials are specifie
d and several examples of materials performance are given. Critical da
ta needs are identified.
