Designing a manufacturing system or, more generally, modelling an exis
ting system in order to make it evolve to provide better performance l
eads to the use of an integrated methodology. This methodology enables
one to understand the system studied for several points of view in a
consistent way. This paper presents GIM (GRAI Integrated Methodology)
which has been developed within the framework of several ESPRIT projec
ts based on the research work developed by the GRAI research group. Th
is integrated methodology proposes a conceptual model, several modelli
ng formalisms and a structured approach supporting the project. The ma
in part of this paper aims at showing a real application of GIM, the p
urpose of which was to reengineer an assembly shop.
