Abstract
The controversy over group selection persists not, as Wilson and Sober argue, because biologists don't understand the hierarchy of vehicles of selection, but because we lack criteria to determine whether a trai t arises from group selection or not, and because of a deep wish to re concile our evolutionary origins with our human moral feelings.
