The frozen-solution Mossbauer spectra of salts containing the anion [F
e4S4(SBut)4]2- show relatively constant isomer shifts. In a range of s
olvents, at the concentrations studied, there is no simple dependence
of the quadrupole splitting (q.s.) on either catin or solvent. The tot
al range of q.s. observed in these solvents is greater the smaller the
cation. In the solvents acetonitrile and dimethyl sulphoxide the tetr
amethylammonium salt exhibits anomalous q.s. values. A comparison is m
ade with the variation of q.s. with cation in the solid state.
