T. Iwert et al., THE OPERATION CHARACTERISTICS OF AXIAL EMISSION IONIZATION GAUGES SIMILAR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF CHEN AT AL, Vacuum, 46(2), 1995, pp. 97-100
The operation characteristics of some axial-emission gauges similar to
the construction of Chen and Suen were studied in the high vacuum ran
ge. Electron space charge effects arose in the case of high cathode po
tentials, yielding a strong dependence of the sensitivity on the emiss
ion current. To avoid this dependence it is necessary to operate the g
auge with low cathode potentials or to increase the voltage between ca
thode and grid. Both the cathode potential and the anode voltage in fl
uence the sensitivity, which passes a maximum with increasing cathode
voltage. The position of this maximum is shifted by the value of the a
node voltage. Both effects are discussed.
