Abstract
We investigated the salinity tolerance range of the adult catarina sca llop (Argopecten ventricosus-circularis) by exposing them to increased and decreased salinity in steps of 5 ppt, each step lasting 24 h, fro m normal salinity (37 ppt) up to 57 ppt and down to 17 ppt at a consta nt 28 degrees C. Our results indicate that A. ventricosus-circularis i s a perfect osmoconformer. Hemolymph osmolality followed the same tren d as the changing external media throughout the salinity levels tested . Survival records indicate that the salinity tolerance is restricted to 27-47 ppt.
