The reproductive cycle of the cockle Laevicardium elatum in Bahia Conc
epcion, B.C.S. Mexico, was studied from October 1988 to October 1990.
Microscopic analysis established that L. elatum is a functional hermap
hrodite with male and female follicles intermingled in the gonad. The
development and spawning of male and female gametes were synchronous.
Spawning occurred between October and April (18-23 degrees C) and was
related to a high food availability and to a lower condition of the or
ganisms.
