PROSPECTS OF CONSTRUCTION AND RELEASE OF GENETICALLY-MODIFIED RHIZOBIA INTO THE ENVIRONMENT

This paper is a review of construction and release of genetically modi fied microorganisms (GMM) into the environment, exemplified by nodule bacteria. Information is presented that is required for evaluation of a situation in natural microbial ecosystems and for prediction the imp act of GMM on the natural environment. The directions of strain constr uction and the requirements for their genetic and biological safety co ntrol have been considered. Different approaches for monitoring of gen etically modified nodule bacteria in natural ecosystems are discussed.
