Abstract
Automatic image interpretation is viewed in this paper as a fourth dim ension-the knowledge dimension-that should be integrated with She thre e-dimensional (3D) analytical geometry of land surfaces in digital pho togrammetry (DP). The fourth dimension contains quantitative and quali tative knowledge. As a small portion of ongoing research, digital terr ain models (DTMs) are the first quantitative portion of knowledge that is integrated with some heuristic knowledge to form a continuously mo dified Knowledge-Based Image interpretation System ((KBIS)-S-2). The s ystem is developed and three image features have been tested on the sy stem, giving an encouraging new dimension to DP.
