Evidence is presented for energy transfer from triplet anthraquinone-2
-sulphonate, ((3)AQS), to pentacyanonitrosylferrate(II), (NP), in aque
ous medium at diffusion rate to yield [Fe(CN)(5)H2O](2-) (LSP-ligand s
ubstituted product). In the presence of hydrogen donor, 2-propanol, [F
e(CN)(4)NO](2-) (TNF-tetracyanonitrosylferrate(II)) is formed in propo
rtion to [IPA] at the cost of LSP. Ground state AQS does not interfere
with the various processes for the quenching of (3)AQS and dissolved
oxygen does not compete with NP for the quenching of (3)AQS, but remov
es the intermediate radical AQSH responsible for the formation of TNF.
Experimental results for the,competitive quenching of (3)AQS by NP an
d IPA are shown to fit into the derived rate expression based on the p
roposed mechanism.
