In a beef suckle herd each cow should produce a live calf every year a
nd provide sufficient milk to enable the calf to attain a high growth
rate. The management of a spring calving herd at the Grange Research C
entre was described. Continental cross cows are bred to continental br
eed sires and high animal performance is achieved in a system based ma
inly on glazed grass and grass conserved as silage, with the provision
of supplementary concentrates when required. Appropriate preventive m
easures are implemented to ensure the health of the herd.
