This Note presents a self-consistent analysis for the prediction of th
e overall behavior of viscous and porous materials. The general form a
ssumed for the overall dissipation potential stems from a simplifying
approximation of the matrix constitutive relations. Both spherical and
cylindrical voids are considered. Explicit forms of the relevant pote
ntials are proposed. These estimates are self-consistent in Budiansky'
s and Hill's sense. They make use of analytical and numerical calculat
ions.
