Abstract
Isotopic labeling studies with O-32(2)/O-36(2) mixtures during photoox idations of sulfides, sulfenamides, sulfenate esters, and disulfides r eveal that the oxygens in the sulfonyl products (R(2)SO(2)) are from d ifferent oxygen molecules except in the case of disulfides which impli cates a new mechanism for the photooxidations of disulfides involving a novel intramolecular cleavage of the sulfur-sulfur bond in a perthio lsulfinate intermediate.
