Twenty-five patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris diagnosed between 1
978 and 1992 were evaluated retrospectively. There were no sex differe
nces. A bimodal age distribution was found (1st and 4th decades). Dist
inctive features such as follicular keratosis and islands of apparentl
y unaffected skin were found in 100% and 72% of all cases respectively
and palmoplantar keratoderma in 52%. Low serum levels of zinc were de
tected in four patients. Retinoids (especially etretinate) were the ma
in therapeutic agents used.
