A spline finite strip method for the analysis of arbitrary Mindlin pla
tes is presented. The plateis first mapped into a square domain in the
natural coordinate plane, by using the cubic serendipity shape functi
on, and the mapped plate is discretised into a number of strips. The d
isplacements of each strip are described by interpolation functions wh
ich are given as products of piecewise polynomials and B-3 spline func
tions. The method, in which three independent reference quantities, w,
theta(x), theta(y) are used to take into account the effects of trans
verse deformation, is applied to the analysis of single and multi-span
fan-shaped bridge decks.
