Pp. Heppner, ON GENDER-ROLE CONFLICT IN MEN - FUTURE-DIRECTIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR COUNSELING - COMMENT ON GOOD ET-AL (1995) AND COURNOYER AND MAHALIK(1995), Journal of counseling psychology, 42(1), 1995, pp. 20-23
Fifteen years of research on gender role conflict indicate it has been
a fruitful construct in counseling psychology. G.E. Good, J. M. Rober
tson, J.M. O'Neil, L. F. Fitzgerald, M. Stevens, K. A. Debord, K. M. B
artels, and D. B. Braverman (1995) and R. J. Cournoyer and J. R. Mahal
ik (1995) add to the empirical knowledge and are certain to stimulate
thinking in this area. In this comment, issues related to (a) psycholo
gical maladjustment, (b) test development, (c) life span development,
and (d) practice implications are discussed. Although clear progress i
s being made, much more is unknown about how gender-related variables
positively and negatively affect male development and, subsequently, t
he practice of counseling psychology.
