Abstract
The effect of tillage on the dynamics of buried weed-seed population w as studied during 1989-90 in the crop fields at Barapani. The conventi onal tillage increased the total buried weed-seed population by 3-4 ti mes compared with no-tillage, but reduced the proportion of viable-dor mant seeds significantly (P<0.01) in the former. The weed seeds were c oncentrated more in the surface layer of the soil than in the deeper l ayers in no-tillage, but reverse was the position. The proportion of v iable dormant seeds was significantly (P<0.01) higher in the deeper so il layers than in the surface layer.
