This paper discusses various issues that have plagued library and info
rmation science education in Africa since the first programmes were es
tablished. A brief historical development of library education is prov
ided, and an analysis of the issues presented. Unresolved issues such
as professionalism, standards, research degrees and recruitment of stu
dents are discussed. For the future, it is noted that attention should
be given to areas such as changes in the curricula, community service
, public education, and the formation of an Association of Library Edu
cators, among others.
