The propargyl radical (CH2C=CH) was produced in a pulsed supersonic je
t expansion by the 193 nm excimer laser photolysis of propargyl chlori
de, and detected by the method of time-resolved infrared diode laser s
pectroscopy. A rotational temperature of 16+/-4 K was obtained in an e
xperiment in which the (r)Q(0)-branch lines of the nu(6) band were obs
erved. The characteristic behavior of the propargyl radical in a super
sonic beam produced by circular and slit nozzles was discussed.
