Abstract
Although it remains controversial as to whether diabetics have an over all increased incidence of infection as compared to nondiabetics, seve ral potentially life-threatening infections do appear to be uniquely a ssociated with diabetes. These infectious generally occur in older dia betics with less than optimal glucose control. For each entity, select ed symptoms and signs may suggest the diagnosis but confirmation of vi a tissue biopsy with culture and histopathology or radiography is usua lly necessary. Management typically requires both antimicrobial treatm ent and surgery.
