Rabbit inflamed synovial tissue grown in culture synthesizes a factor
that induces collagenase synthesis in chondrocytes and in cartilage, S
ynthesis of this factor by the synovial tissue is inhibited by cyclohe
ximide but not by indomethacin. The factor has an apparent molecular w
eight of 30,000, is stable to heat and to trypsin treatment but is ina
ctivated by acid. Induction of collagenase synthesis in chondrocytes o
ccurs after a lag period of 6 hours.
