The ternary sulphide Rb4Re6S12 was synthesized by the combination of r
ubidium carbonate with rhenium in a sulphur-charged argon stream at 80
0 degrees C. Single-crystal X-ray investigations of this compound reve
aled a structure which is isotypic with those previously reported for
Na4Re6S12 and K4Re6S12. These structures consist of [Re6S8] cluster un
its which are three-dimensionally linked in accordance with the formul
a {[Re6S8]S-4/2((S-2))(2/2)}(4-).
