We have studied the liver 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) an
d leukotriene B-4 (LTB(4)) levels in streptozotocin- (ST)-induced diab
etes in rats using liquid chromatography and radioimmunological techni
ques. Diabetic rats showed significant alterations of liver lipoxygena
se metabolites when compared to controls, These 15-HETE and LTB(4) inc
reases were concomitant with raised levels of plasma and tissue thromb
oxane B-2 (TXB(2)) and also urinary 2,3-dinor-TXB(2) in plasma and uri
ne, respectively. These changes confirm an activation of 5- and 15-lip
oxygenase in the liver 3 days after i.p. ST administration.
