Abstract
Fully aromatic and aromatic-aliphatic polyformamidines were prepared b y high-temperature solution polycondensation of the appropriate diamin es with triethyl orthoformate (TEOF). Copolyformamidines of benzidine (4,4'-biphenyldiamine) with p-phenylene and trans-1,4-cyclo-hexylene u nits, respectively, showed liquid-crystalline behaviour. Both series o f copolyformamidines differ distinctly in crystallinity. This has been discussed with respect to sequence distribution, which was determined by C-13 NMR spectroscopy.
