Compton scattering of electrons from photons destroys neither electron
s nor photons, permitting quantum nondemoliton measurements of the pho
ton number. Here we consider a Compton scattering quantum nondemolitio
n measurement of the photon number of an optical pulse traveling in a
prepared optical fiber. A beam of electrons is directed through the ev
anescent field associated with the optical pulse, causing the electron
s to scatter through an angle proportional to the pulse's photon numbe
r.
