The dynamics of viable cell biomass, respiratory activity, and metabol
ites were studied over 35 days of nitrogen starvation. Accumulation of
extracellular substances inhibiting growth was observed. It was shown
that a part of cells retains viability and represents resting cells w
ithout any morphological changes but with an extremely low level of re
spiration and high temperature resistance. The resting cells could be
reactivated by transferring them to conditions of carbon and energy st
arvation.
