Ve. Sokolov et Av. Tchabovsky, THE WORLD CONSERVATION UNION - CONTRIBUTI ON TO BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION PROGRAMS, Izvestia Akademii nauk SSSR. Seria biologiceskaa, (3), 1994, pp. 419-427
The activity of the World Conservation Union in the field of conservat
ion of biodiversity during the last 15 years has been reviewed. In coo
peration with the other international nature conservation organization
s, the IUCN was involved in development of the biodiversity conservati
on policy, ideology and strategy both in the global and national scale
. It was also involved in development and implementation of action pla
ns for certain regions and states. The approaches to the biodiversity
conservation used by the IUCN have been analyzed and a short review of
the main documents along this line prepared in part by the IUCN as we
ll as examples of Action Plans and summaries of the IUCN Commissions'
activities are presented. One current objective of the IUCN is assista
nce in preparation and implementation of the national biodiversity con
servation programs. The cooperation with the IUCN in this field seems
urgent and promising for the Russian nature conservation organizations
and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
