A simplified method of analysing the characteristic horseshoe cracks a
ppearing behind a spherical indenter, sliding along the surface of a b
rittle material, is described. The technique provides a reliable means
of estimating the structure toughness of the material and an explanat
ion of the inter-crack spacing, which is found to be independent of th
e sliding speed.
