Abstract
The pyrano[4,3-b]indol-3-ones (5), readily prepared from t-butyl indol e-2-acetate (2) in three steps, undergo facile intramolecular Diels-Al der reaction on heating to give, after loss of carbon dioxide, the [c] -annelated carbazoles (6).
