In the second half of 1992, a team at the Software Engineering Institu
te, Carnegie Mellon University, conducted a study of the state of the
practice with respect to operational use of CASE integration. It was m
ore difficult to find examples than we had anticipated. Ultimately, th
e team did find a number of examples in large organizations having mul
tiple years of CASE experience. Compared to the state of the art, what
was found might be considered modest. Compared to industry norms, it
was quite impressive, requiring significant commitment and real attent
ion to end-user needs. The interdependence of process and tools seemed
important, and operational integration usually meant point-to-point i
ntegration, focused on a process piece. There were a number of shared
experiences and common themes across the organizations.
