Polythiocycloalkane (PTCA), -N,N-dimethylamino-1,2,3,4,5-pentathiocycl
ooctane, is an insecticide developed in China during the past 10 years
. In vitro metabolism of PTCA by rat liver microsomes was studied. The
metabolites were isolated and characterized by high-performance liqui
d chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, and infrared s
pectroscopy. The results were verified by comparison with synthesized
standards, evisect (N,N-dimethyl-1,2,3-trithian-5-amine) and nereistox
in (N,N-dimethyl-1,2-dithiolan-4-amine), or by biochemical analysis. T
he main metabolites were evisect, nereistoxin, monomethyl nereistoxin,
2-methylaminopropane, and sulfur polymers. The process was catalyzed
mainly by enzymatic reactions, such as desulfuration and demethylation
. The in vitro metabolism of PTCA by rat liver microsomes pretreated w
ith phenobarbital may be a detoxification process. (C) 1995 Academic P
